Standard Polaroid Pack film conversions often include changes in optics, lens boards, infinity point, viewfinder, sync socket, cold shoe and  cam profile, typically the conversions come in 3 basic body modification styles.

  • The first and least time consuming is with the end of the camera cut off and the rear cover typically cut in half, these are usually recovered in an un original finish and have car body filler or other materials filling voids where the metal was cut away. This is the least original looking and in many aspects a bit of a hack, this is by far the most common conversion, often using the lower cost wire clip back and sell from several builders for £300 upwards, Personally this is not my 1st choice of mod style, however if converting on a budget will save several hours and the use of specialist machine tools, so porbably a good place to start if doing the work yourself.

  • The second and less common style is to notch the rear of the case so that from the front the camera apears almost standard, and still cut the rear door in half. This looks great from the front and allow the retension of the original covering so that you can achive a finish which from the front at least looks original and has a good retro /vintage feel. Takes a little longer than the 1st but worth the extra effort.

  • The third and virtually unknown method is one I have developed beyond anything I have seen offered elsewhere and allows the camera to look original from both the front and rear, the rear door latching using the orignal locks and showing very little sign that the camera is now a film pack camera, the film now exiting from under the cutter bar and the back machined away but using all original parts and covering, no car body filler  allowed, and fully machined metalwork to allow the inclusion of a machined film holder, by far the most time consuming conversion, but often fooling even the trained eye and looking as if this were a real model which may have rolled of the factory line!

Given the time invlved with each of my conversions you will i'm sure realise that I do this for the chalenge and sometimes just to prove what is possible given enough time and effort. I am happy to help other Photographers who love instant or large format photography and will gladly help you convert your cameras, either fully or in part, however I would ask that at least some of my time is paid for as I do all camera work in my free time, and so often have to treat the family a little in return and in order to justify my constant trips and long evenings and lost weekends in the shed ;-)
